‘My mother is scraping a piece of burned toast out of the kitchen window, a crease of annoyance across her forehead. This is not an occasional occurrence. My mother burns the toast as surely as the sun rises each morning.’

One of my all time favourite books. I always love the personal snippets woven into Nigel’s recipes and Toast was his first foray into writing a book that reflected his life through food. A must-read for all Nigel Slater fans.

If you’re a lover of all things nostalgic, then this book vividly recreates life in 60s/70s suburbia. From Arctic Roll Walnut Whips and Boxing Day stew, to Christmas cake, marshmallows and lemon meringue pie.

Like all things nostalgic, the narrative is tinged with sadness. Nigel’s description of marshmallows and what they came to mean to him is one of the most moving things I’ve read.
